It's really, really hard to pick out one book for students, one that gives a good overview of technical information. I've like this book:
JEWELRY MAKING - FOR SCHOOLS, TRADESMEN, CRAFTSMEN by
Murray Bovin
I've had this book since I first started making jewelry in 1975 and I still refer to it. It's basic - it uses time tested jewelry making techniques and doesn't rely on fancy gadgets or expensive, over the top equipment for teaching the basics.
It covers all the fundamentals like soldering, pickling, annealing, sawing, use of pliers, etc. in the first section. Then it goes into decorative processes such as chasing and repousse, enameling, engraving, etching and more. After that comes casting information, stone setting, chain making basics and jewelry construction. As my teacher, Alan Revere always told us: "Jewelry making is 10 techniques and 10,000 tricks." You may not pick up 10,000 tricks in this book but you will certainly be enlightened as to the 10 techniques!
And if you want to learn more and live in the Princeton area......my individual jewelry making lessons are ongoing and I know lot's of tricks!!!!
