Why I Love Paste Solder

I have to admit it has taken me a while to come around to using paste solder. To me, soldering is the fun part. I like to cut up those little chips and place them where they need to go. I love watching the heat build up around the solder join and then - poof! It flows! And, I hate to admit it too, but I have gotten a bit stuck in my ways and used to doing things just so.......... More and more I'm finding myself reaching for the paste solder tubes. What I love is that it stays put! I can solder a ring shank to the back of a setting by sticking the shank right on the back without using a third hand which sucks up all the heat and makes the process more tricky. It's great for attaching small jump rings to a larger piece for the same reason. If it looks as if you've placed too much solder paste, it is easy to wipe off with a pick or a small brush. Another thing I love about it is that if you heat the pieces up just slightly and touch the join area with a solder pick and a little glob of paste solder on the end, you can simply touch it to the spot and it melts into place. This is great for hard to reach areas where placing a chip of solder can be a challenge to say the least. I'd say the only time I don't use paste solder now is for soldering bezels to a back sheet. I think you get a better flow with chips and flux. Would love to hear your thoughts..............
